Why I Deleted My Wedding Pins on Pinterest

Pinterest has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years. Women and girls have been pinning ideas about parties and yummy food and Fitspo and ESPECIALLY about their dream wedding.  All aspects are pinned meticulously to boards for wedding dresses, engagement rings, bridesmaid dresses, color schemes, table arrangements, floral pieces… the list goes on. I started my Pinterest account when I was a young teen and have found it to be very useful to plan big dances for the youth of my local church and for my outfit ideas. I loved to fantasize about what my wedding dress would look like and how in love I would be on my wedding day. Pin after pin would be posted as I hoped for the future.

Now, I am a married woman of 2 and a half months and I have deleted those boards about weddings. Why? You may ask? Let me tell you. I believe that marriages are meant to last forever. Its not a temporary union. And I decided that I didn’t want to have any regrets about my decision to marry my husband. I don’t want to be longing for a different dress. I don’t want to be wishing that our special day was better. I know it’s not about material things. Our relationship is about us and our support for each other and our love. But I also know that wanting something better can change your view of the past. I don’t want consumerism and THINGS to change or taint how I feel about the day I committed to love my husband forever. I absolutely love my wedding dress. Its totally me and it took some arm twisting to get the dress. I feel like a true princess when I wear it. The rest of the details of our wedding just fell in place. We chose our colors based on the invitations we sent out because we loved the combination. My wonderful aunt and cousin found the perfect bridesmaid dresses a couple days after I officially started looking for them. They were summery and inexpensive and adorable! Our wedding and reception fell into place and I really had minimal help from Pinterest, a lot less than I thought I would have. So that leads me to my decision now. I deleted my Pinterest boards about wedding dresses, rings, bridesmaids, table settings, and color schemes. I decided to stop fantasizing now about what could have been on that wonderful day and I decided to bask in the glory of our holy union and what actually happened because it was the best thing I have ever done. Our day was perfect just as it happened! I won’t have any doubts or wishes for something different. I am grateful for our wedding day, I am grateful for my husband, grateful for my family that made it possible, grateful for our happiness together now. I don’t want anyone or anything to take that away from us.

Thank you SpiceRack Photography for such beautiful wedding photos!

Motorcycles and You

I see people riding bikes around all the time here in town. In Idaho, it’s not a rule that you have to wear a helmet on the road. I think its crazy how many people don’t wear one! I also think its crazy how many people don’t approve of dirt bikes, street bikes, any type of two wheeled vehicle. Obviously these people aren’t usually in the same group but both of their actions and opinions are wrong. I understand that these are all personal views and beliefs that these people carry out but I hope that they can drive some sense into their brain. Motorcycles are NOT dangerous. If you wear the right protection and are careful, your injury rate goes down immensely. Those people who think they are safe just driving around town with no helmet are in the most danger. The main reason bikers get in accidents is because of careless car drivers, so they could be better off not wearing a helmet while driving on the highway. Either way, helmets and proper gear and protection are KEY! If you are driving at high speeds on the highway on a bike, and you get in an accident, there’s a big chance you will get severely injured, as with any crash on the highway or freeway. But those people who don’t wear helmets even just riding around the neighborhood, can still get majorly injured! The little spills and accidents that happen can turn into serious brain and body injuries if you don’t have a helmet. These kinds of tragedies can be avoided by just putting on a helmet. You may think you look stupid wearing a helmet but it will be a lot better than when you are actually mentally impaired when you could have prevented the situation in the first place.  So, overall I’m just pleading for those of you who ride to put on a helmet! It makes all those potential accidents you may possibly be in a lot less extreme. You put your best interests first when you put on a helmet, it doesn’t matter what others think. It’s okay if the hot babes don’t see your face while riding your sweet bike.

For all those who don’t approve of bikes, live a little! Bikes are so fun! Theres nothing comparable to being able to go anywhere on the terrain and explore new places, drive fast with the wind on your face and in your hair, getting dirty in the mud, and improving your skills. Bikes are not dangerous. It takes some time to learn how to ride a bike and you should always ride around your comfort and skill level. It goes with anything yo learn to do. No one knows how to drive a car but we give that vehicle/weapon to 15 year olds to start learning. I’ve heard some people say “I told you those bikes were dangerous” when my dad broke his hand riding. We were 15 minutes into a ride and we were going down into the woods. my dad was ahead of me by a minute or two and when I rode up he was on the ground. He and another rider had collided at a skinny part in the road and his had was between the two bikes’ handlebars. here are some risks in riding but most are rider induced. Riders who go beyond their skill and get hurt or riders who run into each other. Its not the bikes that do the damage. Dirtbikes are just as dangerous as scuba diving or surfing, but people do it all the time and life goes on.

Women's Day

Thoughts on International Women’s Day

I am so happy that we could have a day that celebrates the effect that women have on our world. Women DO make a difference and I think it’s ever important that we realize this. Women are the victims of violence and mistreatment more than ever before and this is one way that societies and people are turned against each other. Why would women be victims if they are truly “not important” as some people and cultures believe? They are important and they are being targeted in many ways that are overwhelming. Women have a profound role, no matter where they are. Women are divinely designed to be kind and nurturing and caring. They are the glue to a family, it’s too bad that less and less people want to start families because its not popular or it is seen as a menial task to bear and rear children. Women are meant to be forces for good. I mean all these things in the most loving and caring way possible. It hurts me to see so many good women in my life who have supported me and helped me grow to be the person I am today, and how the world has trained society to downgrade us and bombard us with the pressure to be just beautiful, just a pretty face and judged only by our appearance. That’s just in America. In other places, women are seen as inferior and just not important at all, given no rights and no opportunities to make something of themselves. They are restricted to being servants of the man. They are married off at young ages and given no education. This feels wrong! Not because I have grown up a different way than them but because we are equals. There are only two genders, how could nature of God have made on of the two inferior? Women are amazing! they can build life and bring families together to be healthy, strong, and loved. When you kill a woman, you kill a whole potential generation that could have been. I watched a few TED talks today and one really got me thinking about all this. Its called “How I work to Protect Women From Honor Killings” by Khalida Brohi. This video made me think of how hard it is to change a culture. We can’t just go out and call out other peoples beliefs and there customs, but we can give the right tools to people who are affected by those customs so that they break the tradition and start the change for the coming generation. I can’t propose any solutions except the ones already given, such as training women on skills that help them to become empowered and independent, but I wish that more people would be sympathetic to the role of the woman in today’s society. It’s hard out here for us, so much pressure from every side to be perfect, to be conforming, to not be judged. I believe that man and woman are equal but different. I believe we do have certain roles that help relationships stay balanced; yes they may be traditional, but that is not downgrading, its beautiful! Child-rearing is something women are good at! It is a privilege to take care of the small souls God has given us, to nurture them so that they grow to become their own person. Its beautiful. I believe women should be educated and have the power to be self sufficient and independent. I also believe that man and woman are meant to be together and that marriage is ordained of God and divinely designed. I believe that we should let men hold the door for us sometimes too, because they need manly validation as well. It’s okay to let chivalry live and be your own woman! I know this post has been all over the place, but I hope it brings a new view to an already talked about topic. I do not mean to offend anyone in any way, I am just sharing some thoughts and views I have had in the past few days and some of my own beliefs. I hope you can accept that and step away with something. Happy belated International Women’s Day too 🙂

EDM: New Music Releases and Other Noteworthy Artists

A new sub genre of music has recently risen in popularity in the last few years. Some know it as EDM (electronic dance music). Although EDM is a sub genre, there are many similar sub sub genres to it as well. These include trap, deep house, dubstep, and many other variations. I love all these! My personal Soundcloud account is full of all kinds of EDM music. This is funny because I am NOT  a rave kind of girl or a partier in any sense. I am pretty introverted and like my circle of close friends. There isn’t too much that appeals to me about going to music festivals for EDM that are riddled with drugs, weirdos, and close sweaty bodies. Aside from me being borderline antisocial, I like this genre of music and follow it regularly. I would have to say my favorite artist is Dillon Francis, straight up! I also find quality mixes from Steve Aoki, Diplo, Yellowclaw, and Caked Up.

First, I think their stories are pretty cool! Dillon Francis is my fave, so we’ll start there. I don’t know too much on his back story but I do know how he markets himself. Dillon Francis has an Instagram account and a Snapchat where his stories are public. Francis uses good PR skills to connect with his fans. His IG account includes funny videos making fun of “real facts” and are just totally random. This may not sound like a great marketing strategy but the target market is teens and young adults, so the nature of the videos match up. Totally random and smart-alecky. It’s so entertaining! Francis also posts pics from his concerts with oh so cool filters and captions. These are to promote his tour. His Snapchat story is quite the hoot as well. Snapchat(dillonfrancis)

Both Steve Aoki and Diplo are amazing artists as well.  Aoki has started his own record label called Dim Mak. It’s interesting because Dim Mak actually means “touch of death”. Cool or threatening? Either way, Aoki has become famous around the world for his music. This is quite the anomaly because music is generally regional within reason. Since most EDM music has no words or any significant language to it, its mostly beats, the music is transferable across languages and regions. Diplo has started a similar career. He too travels around the world for shows and has also created his own label, Mad Decent. With this he can promote his work and sell clothing and other products to label himself and his work.

Some people might think that these artists are just punks who make repetitive and annoying music, but obviously they’re doing something right! This music has rocketed in popularity. Many EDM type songs are seen in the top charts and many new pop songs coming out have electronic elements to them, incorporating the electronic sound into parts of the songs. Whether you like it or not, EDM is coming to the forefront of music. Its great music to gt you going, perfect for a workout session to get you pumped, or just good listening!

Dance Showcase Poster

Here is the first advertisement I was able to have published. I won a contest among the many graphic design classes in high school, so my work was plastered all over the place at school, online, and in the community to advertise this dance production. The show is kind of a big deal in he Rocklin area. There are two high schools that are highly competitive in sports, including dance. Both schools have nationally recognized teams and many girls in high school are highly involved in dance instruction. I think that that area had an exceptionally high volume of dance participants, so it was cool that my poster was selected to represent our schools production. It was also interesting because the highest level dance team from the opposing nearby school also participated in our schools presentation as well, so it was a piece that tied two rival schools together. I’m really proud of this piece because when I first started conjuring up ideas for what the poster should look like, I was just messing around and playing with fun ideas. The fun idea seemed to work and when my instructor saw it, she immediately saw that it was above the others. Not to toot my own horn but it looked pretty awesome compared to the other creations. I was surprised to find that my fun idea was now posted on every blank wall around the campus and it was a different feeling that i liked being able to say “Hey, I made that!” when others commented on the poster. Overall, it was an interesting building experience!

Early work that started it all!

So the featured image above is one of the first projects I finished in high school. It was the first project I was satisfied with, one looking like it wasn’t made by a monkey on a computer! This is a Type Montage and the white space image in the center is supposed to be the outline of a longboard. All the words surrounding it are words that I thought related to riding longboards! It is one of my favorite activities to do when the weather is not horrible. Guess that’s not an option here in Idaho! All I have to say about this piece is that it was relatively easy i.e. typing words, adjusting font size, changing colors, and organizing words. The only hard part was that it was very time consuming! Overall though, I enjoy working with Photoshop when I know what I’m doing. Otherwise it’s frustrating.  Anyway, like I said, I was satisfied with this project even thought it’s not exactly high quality or professional by any means. By posting this I hope that you and I both will be able to see the progression I’m making as I take more classes to improve my design skills.

Happy Designing friends!
