Last Minute Gifts For Mom! Amazon Edition

Mothers Day has always creeped up on me. I remember one Mothers Day when my sister and I realized it was the day and we had nothing planned and nothing bought for mom AT ALL. We put together the infamous “coupon book” that every youngster makes or is given to gift their parents that no one actually ever uses. We drew some cute drawings on colorful paper and made breakfast in bed for mom and all was mostly well! It was fine for being like 9 years old and unprepared. But now its different. Now that I am older, I realize all the things my mom did for me and for our family, all that she sacrificed, all the difficult decisions she had to make,  and all the money it requires to raise children. Now I try to do there best I can for my mom on Mothers Day and Christmas to let her know she is appreciated. I try every day to let her know she is loved by keeping in contact with her. She deserves it.

So Mother Day is coming up quick! And I want to show you some of the awesome possibilities for gifts available on Amazon because it quick, easy, and inexpensive. But I want to preface the post by saying that gifts are NOT THE ONLY way of showing your appreciation and are not completely necessary. “Home” In A Strange Place

Thoughts on coping with calling an unexpected location your new home.

Have you ever thought about how you love the place where you grew up? The warm Saturdays at the field, the way laundry smells when mom is home doing work around the house, how that one Mexican restaurant is your families favorite, and the lady at the bank remembers you from when you were just tiny and stealing more candy than you needed from the bowl at her desk. Sometimes I just sit and think about how the Sacramento area was just the perfect place to grow up and how my family and I just fit in so well to the community. We had our spot and things we would do and people we knew and favorite hang out spots that no one else knew about. I also think about how my mom grew up somewhere else and that the way I feel about home may not have been how she felt about our home until she had been there awhile and settled in. I feel that way about where I live now.

Now, I am not a mother yet, but I don’t live with my husband where either of us grew up. I live in Salt Lake City now and its been a strange experience. Its only been about 8 months that Ive been here and I am just waiting for those “home experiences” where I am comfortable, people know me, and I love the little undiscovered parts of town and the surrounding area. I’m not there yet. I don’t know if that just happens as you grow up, you see the truth behind the glowing memories and see what is really before your eyes, but I have to think that I can have those glowing memories come from this new “home” as well. And then I don’t want to because I know I won’t be here long. We will only be here as long as my husband is in school for his Masters degree and thats only a couple more years. So do I settle in and try to make this home feel like my childhood home? Do I create that halo effect of the memories that I will have of this place and put effort into making it that way. Or do I welcome the new experience of now. Do I wait for a new “home” where I can settle in and find my place in the community so that my children will have that feeling of belonging and close knit neighbors and friendly passerby? Here in SLC, I drive to the packed Southside of the city for work, I work on my online classes in my apartment in an older complex hidden in a suburban neighborhood. There are people I am afraid of in my complex, there are children that are loud in the morning and frustrate me as they pound down the stairs and wake me up. there are smokers who make my home smell, there is a dirty creek behind my building, and someone stole a tire iron from my husbands jeep. These are the things that come to mind when I think of where I live now. Maybe its just a shift of mindset that needs to happen?

As the weather grows warmer, my memories and attitude toward this place warm up as well. I see the ducks in the rising creek play around, I see the flowers bloom on the trimmed bushes, the vitamin d from the sunshine makes me smile as I soak in the rays from the forgotten sun after months of cold winter. I look at our cozy and bright apartment int he evening, when its 7:30 and still light out, and I smile because we have all this together. And I think thats what makes up those golden memories from the past: warm weather, clean kitchens, ducks in the pond, flowers coming out to say hi, snow on the distant desert range melting day after day, and hope in the future to accompany the company of your loved one. I think it is possible to make a home in a strange place. It will definitely not be like your childhood home, but the halo effect on your memory of where you now occupy will come with time as you take in the moment and appreciate whats around you and who is around you. In no time, your memories and feeling toward your home will be as picturesque as if you had taken it with a polaroid. Imperfect yet just they way you wanted it to turn out.

BEST Makeup “Brushes” Today- Compared

All of us makeup lovers out there have seen the trends come and go for how to apply your foundation. Instagram shows us even weirder possibilities like spatulas, shoes, knives, and tacos, totally outside the normal and sensible makeup tools! Traditionally we see brushes and makeup sponges used in applying foundation. Right now, the popular trend is to use a Beauty Blender or a silicone “sponge” or silisponge. Today I want to compare three popular and mostly conservative makeup tools side by side to show you the difference between their application. You might not think so but not all makeup tools are created equal! So lets compare the classic foundation brush, the Beauty Blender sponge, and the silisponge.

Im going to show you how they first swipe onto the skin, how they blend out, and how easy they are to clean. My goal is to show you why each applicator is different and what they are best used for so that you can have confidence in using them and find what you like for your personal makeup preference! Here we go!

img_4709.jpg

Foundation Brush- These are the most common, brushes are used in many parts of the makeup application. There are different styles of makeup brush for your preference, flat, big and soft, tight and compact brush bristles, flat top, brushes that look like a fish… there are many! Great for liquid foundation and perfect for powder foundation and finishing powder. Check out these foundation brushes, and these ones! This one is super cute too 🙂

img_4725.jpg

Beauty Blender- Basically a glorified reusable makeup sponge. There are many off brands of the original Beauty Blender. Whether you are using the original or a knockoff, they are pretty much the same and go by the same name. I am using a version from Forever 21, they came in a 2 pack for cheap. TJ Maxx and Ross also have a great inexpensive selection! Great for a natural, dewey makeup look. Also works with finishing powder but not as much as a brush. Heres a great deal on a pack of blenders. This ECO friendly blender is a great option too.

img_4717.jpg

Silisponge- Probably the weirdest of the three products on here today! This makeup tool is inspired by makeup artists on Instagram using random objects to blend out their makeup and one of those items being a silicone bra insert! It became so popular that companies started manufacturing an actual silicone sponge shaped applicator for makeup! Now this thing is NOTHING like a sponge. It does not waste or soak up any product like a sponge would. It just spreads the liquid foundation round like peanut butter on bread! I found mine in a 2 pack at Walmart for 4$, so not bad! I really don’t think there is a different between the high end brand and the Walmart, its literally just a smooth jelly feeling pod for makeup. Lets see how it compares to the other two! Shop this product here

Silisponge

Here is a comparison of all three…

Comparison Photo

Brush- can see stroke lines, somewhat blended, streaky, uneven, overall great coverage and blending. Medium amount of product soaked up.

Blender- Lots of product soaked up! Amazing blending, not amazing at spreading product, very natural look, not streaks, no lines.

Silisponge- FAIL no product wasted, very patchy, lots of line and unevenness, not natural at all. I would be embarrassed to walk out with this blend job…

Overall, I absolutely love the beauty blender sponge. It blends out perfectly for a soft and natural finish on your skin and leaves no trace of streakiness. Its THE BEST! The brush come sin second, its good in general but a little streaky. The silicone sponge though…. DONT GET ME STARTED! Its a flop… the only thing I use it for really is to move the makeup around on my face so I can blend it later with the sponge. Beauty Blender: Winner!

So now that you know about the differences between these three common makeup products, you can make the best choice for your makeup application! These tools can be very inexpensive, and they definitely have their more pricey counterparts, BUT I hope I could save you some $$ by showing you these before you pick the wrong tool for you! Hopefully you find “the one” for your daily makeup routine!

Check out the links in the descriptions above for some great options on Amazon, there are some very reliable options and some that are very cute and creative as well!

May your eyeliner be on fleek and your foundation perfectly blended!

DRAFT 3 Makeup Tools Compared: Which One Wins??

The Craziest Baking Mold?!

I have to preface this post with a funny story from the other day.

IMG_4802

It’s a Sunday morning. The light is coming in through the window and its a serene morning. I hear my husband in the other room, probably in the kitchen making breakfast already. I pick up my phone and scroll through it. Mitchell comes back to the bedroom and greets me good morning. I lay in bed, enjoying a relaxing slow paced morning. Mitchell goes back to the kitchen and returns, places a white plate on top of the covers just next to me. I look down to see what he brought me and I see THREE POOPS aligned nicely on a hand lettered plate from our wedding reception! In my mind I am thinking “WHAT THE HECK DID HE BRING ME??” and I take a whiff and it SMELLS GOOD! -What is happening?!- He had made muffins in this POOP EMOJI shaped mold! I couldn’t believe how realistic it looked at first! I think it was mainly how the muffins were made… Anyway, I’m not going to get into the details but it was pretty funny! The muffins were delicious even if they were “oddly” shaped!

IMG_3823
Here are the evil, realistic, muffins from the other day! They were yummy though!

This is the craziest baking mold! I received this as a gift from my mom for Christmas because she knows I like quirky silly gifts. I want to make brownies in them and put the classic poop emoji facial expression on it so it looks just like the emoji 🙂

This silicone baking mold is a great gag gift for any baker you know- young or old- as long as they appreciate a good poop joke! If you love emojis and mildly inappropriate humor, this is a fun buy! Here is the link to the mold on Amazon, where we got it from! Check it out! Can’t wait to make more inaprops treats 🙂

Why I Deleted My Wedding Pins on Pinterest

Pinterest has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years. Women and girls have been pinning ideas about parties and yummy food and Fitspo and ESPECIALLY about their dream wedding.  All aspects are pinned meticulously to boards for wedding dresses, engagement rings, bridesmaid dresses, color schemes, table arrangements, floral pieces… the list goes on. I started my Pinterest account when I was a young teen and have found it to be very useful to plan big dances for the youth of my local church and for my outfit ideas. I loved to fantasize about what my wedding dress would look like and how in love I would be on my wedding day. Pin after pin would be posted as I hoped for the future.

Now, I am a married woman of 2 and a half months and I have deleted those boards about weddings. Why? You may ask? Let me tell you. I believe that marriages are meant to last forever. Its not a temporary union. And I decided that I didn’t want to have any regrets about my decision to marry my husband. I don’t want to be longing for a different dress. I don’t want to be wishing that our special day was better. I know it’s not about material things. Our relationship is about us and our support for each other and our love. But I also know that wanting something better can change your view of the past. I don’t want consumerism and THINGS to change or taint how I feel about the day I committed to love my husband forever. I absolutely love my wedding dress. Its totally me and it took some arm twisting to get the dress. I feel like a true princess when I wear it. The rest of the details of our wedding just fell in place. We chose our colors based on the invitations we sent out because we loved the combination. My wonderful aunt and cousin found the perfect bridesmaid dresses a couple days after I officially started looking for them. They were summery and inexpensive and adorable! Our wedding and reception fell into place and I really had minimal help from Pinterest, a lot less than I thought I would have. So that leads me to my decision now. I deleted my Pinterest boards about wedding dresses, rings, bridesmaids, table settings, and color schemes. I decided to stop fantasizing now about what could have been on that wonderful day and I decided to bask in the glory of our holy union and what actually happened because it was the best thing I have ever done. Our day was perfect just as it happened! I won’t have any doubts or wishes for something different. I am grateful for our wedding day, I am grateful for my husband, grateful for my family that made it possible, grateful for our happiness together now. I don’t want anyone or anything to take that away from us.

Thank you SpiceRack Photography for such beautiful wedding photos!

Motorcycles and You

I see people riding bikes around all the time here in town. In Idaho, it’s not a rule that you have to wear a helmet on the road. I think its crazy how many people don’t wear one! I also think its crazy how many people don’t approve of dirt bikes, street bikes, any type of two wheeled vehicle. Obviously these people aren’t usually in the same group but both of their actions and opinions are wrong. I understand that these are all personal views and beliefs that these people carry out but I hope that they can drive some sense into their brain. Motorcycles are NOT dangerous. If you wear the right protection and are careful, your injury rate goes down immensely. Those people who think they are safe just driving around town with no helmet are in the most danger. The main reason bikers get in accidents is because of careless car drivers, so they could be better off not wearing a helmet while driving on the highway. Either way, helmets and proper gear and protection are KEY! If you are driving at high speeds on the highway on a bike, and you get in an accident, there’s a big chance you will get severely injured, as with any crash on the highway or freeway. But those people who don’t wear helmets even just riding around the neighborhood, can still get majorly injured! The little spills and accidents that happen can turn into serious brain and body injuries if you don’t have a helmet. These kinds of tragedies can be avoided by just putting on a helmet. You may think you look stupid wearing a helmet but it will be a lot better than when you are actually mentally impaired when you could have prevented the situation in the first place.  So, overall I’m just pleading for those of you who ride to put on a helmet! It makes all those potential accidents you may possibly be in a lot less extreme. You put your best interests first when you put on a helmet, it doesn’t matter what others think. It’s okay if the hot babes don’t see your face while riding your sweet bike.

For all those who don’t approve of bikes, live a little! Bikes are so fun! Theres nothing comparable to being able to go anywhere on the terrain and explore new places, drive fast with the wind on your face and in your hair, getting dirty in the mud, and improving your skills. Bikes are not dangerous. It takes some time to learn how to ride a bike and you should always ride around your comfort and skill level. It goes with anything yo learn to do. No one knows how to drive a car but we give that vehicle/weapon to 15 year olds to start learning. I’ve heard some people say “I told you those bikes were dangerous” when my dad broke his hand riding. We were 15 minutes into a ride and we were going down into the woods. my dad was ahead of me by a minute or two and when I rode up he was on the ground. He and another rider had collided at a skinny part in the road and his had was between the two bikes’ handlebars. here are some risks in riding but most are rider induced. Riders who go beyond their skill and get hurt or riders who run into each other. Its not the bikes that do the damage. Dirtbikes are just as dangerous as scuba diving or surfing, but people do it all the time and life goes on.
