Deconstruct an Article Promotion

Today I wanted to talk about article promotion and show you a great example I have seen on Instagram. Article promotions are like the only links I will click on these days! I don’t mind reading articles about things I am interested in, but as soon as it hits to an advertisement or learn more tab, I am OUT!

So the great example of article promotion I wanted to share is by a company called “HudaBeauty” run by beauty pro Huda Kattan. She is the face of her brand and is recognized by makeup lovers all over the world. And I mean all over the world for a reason because she promotes her makeup tips and tricks as well as products in English and Arabic, so she has a pretty far reach in the market. I love watching her Youtube videos and seeing her articles promotion posts on Snapchat, she does a wonderful job in directing traffic to her website. She gives off a genuine feel in all that she posts. She also promotes her makeup tricks through her Instagram. Most of her posts are showing off other peoples work with her products but occasionally she will post her video of a tutorial or a makeup swatch or how a new product works. She then will put the link to that expanded post for her website in her biography link in her Insta profile. This is just the nature of Instagram that live links can only be put in the profile section, not the actual post itself. So here is here latest post about How To Clean False Lashes

As you can see, she posted the How To video and the link is inherently bio. When you click the link it follows to her website where the original post is. Heres the link if you want to check it out followed by the site screenshots. HudaBeauty

So I think she did a great job with promoting her Instagram and website. The Instagram video is in her site article and the Instagram page links to her article. I would say her social media channels are all interwoven and that is really important. That is definitely a strength in how HudaBeauty shares their posts. Her image is consistent across the two sites. She keeps her color scheme of black white and pink with Huda Kattan being the main person. Some weaknesses I see are that the posts is pretty short on the website. I think there is more info about how to clean the lashes in the video than the actual article so its almost redundant to have a whole other article about it on the website. I think the fact that her article is short could be a strength and a weakness. I know I like her other articles because they are short and to the point and not painfully long or repetitive, thats why I like reading them. In this case though, the video has more info than the actual article. When posting a video in an article I think the article should expand on what is shown or talked about in the video so that they are complimentary. I also like that on her site there are relevant related articles suggested on the sidebar and at the end. There are no ads for random clickbait sites and I really appreciate that. I also don’t know if this is a strength or weakness but I think it is strange that the title of the article is different on the site than what the title of the video is on Instagram? Like shouldn’t they be the same? What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks for reading and hope this gives you some ideas and inspiration for your next round of article promotion posting! Thoughts and comments are welcome below!

Deconstruct an Advertisement

Lets talk about why Halo Top Creamery icecream has become so wildly popular, so quickly! I want to show this photo of an Instagram post by Halo Top. Its a bit older, but its a good one. Here are a few points I wanted to go over about this ad.

  1. What is the main purpose of the ad?

The main purpose of this ad is to show off one of the many flavors from the company AND to show how few calories are in it. It shows a fun vibrant flavor…HOW COULD THERE POSSIBLY BE 240 CALORIES IN IT? Yes its that amazing. Thats the main point of this ad.

  1. What are the ad’s strengths?

It is very bright and eye catching. Unicorns are also very trendy and popular at the moment, so that attracts likes and attention. It showcases the brands top feature- its Low Calorie feature, too.

  1. What are the ad’s weaknesses?

It is not very informative. They only have text for one line of the post. Many people do not read long text posts on Instagram, but it still does not convey much information, just a clever little line about unicorns.

  1. What is the ad trying to accomplish with its design?

It is trying to draw the eye to the calorie count. It is trying to show that you can have fun while eating ice cream and not counting calories. It is showing that Halo Top is a carefree treat.

  1. What metrics (likes, shares, re-tweets, etc.) will be used to determine if the ad is successful?

This ad will be popular if it gets a lot of like. that is seen just under the photo with a count of how many people like it. It will also show if some of your friends or people you follow, like it too so it creates a community feel as well.

Halo Top is so great at advertising and I just wanted to highlight some of their tactics. They are a great brand to follow and observe.

Google Analytics

Learning about Analytics this week was really great! I saw how powerful this tool can be. Not just for my site but also as a businessperson in general, if you know Analytics you can get certified and become a great asset wherever you go. I haven’t had too much traffic to my site so it was hard to comprehend exactly how valuable the program is but I know it’s very detailed, even more so than WordPress statistics which I monitor pretty often for my site here. Analytics was really easy to set up for Wix, my host site. I didn’t have to copy and paste and possibly mess up the code, I just typed in the short digit code from Analytics and it was ready to go. I also linked my Adwords account too, we will see how that goes when I get my ads going. All together it was a really great learning experience and I’m excited to learn more about it.

Google Advertising

Learned a lot about using Google Adwords and creating advertisements to show on Google. Its such a. Simple thing to create but it is challenging to fit your whole company or product into 3 or 4 lines and make an impact on potential buyers! Every word has to be precise and clean and the phrases have to flow. Your condensed message really has to grab attention but also reflect what you are selling well enough for people to stay interested. Starting out, I found it the most easy to grab attention with a sale headline of 15% off. I couldn’t think of much else and I feel like people wouldn’t be interested in my new site unless I had something to offer and differentiate from already established sites and companies. As I publish more ads I will see what works and what doesn’t. It was cool to experiment with this important part of running an online business.

Website of the Week 7

AAF is important for a Comm major because advertising is all over the place in the Communications career path. Here’s why www.aaf.org is helpful

  1. This is where you can see what AAF is all about. There’s lots to know about what AAF does and the organizations benefits. Here would be a good place to look if you are interested in joining or are an Advertising emphasis, in which you should probably already be involved.
  2. This site also has internship opportunities which would be good to look at in the later part of your college education.
  3. There are events on this page which you can attend to network and to gain more experience and exposure to AAF and to advertising
  4. Most of the different emphases in the Comm major are interconnected, so it is important to get a well rounded experience in all of them to better your specific study. Joining AAF or checking it out may open up different opportunities in your major and this website is a place tog et started at.
  5. AAF gives great experience in the advertising side of Communications and will give you a head start. This site can inform you on all the possibilities.

EDM: New Music Releases and Other Noteworthy Artists

A new sub genre of music has recently risen in popularity in the last few years. Some know it as EDM (electronic dance music). Although EDM is a sub genre, there are many similar sub sub genres to it as well. These include trap, deep house, dubstep, and many other variations. I love all these! My personal Soundcloud account is full of all kinds of EDM music. This is funny because I am NOT  a rave kind of girl or a partier in any sense. I am pretty introverted and like my circle of close friends. There isn’t too much that appeals to me about going to music festivals for EDM that are riddled with drugs, weirdos, and close sweaty bodies. Aside from me being borderline antisocial, I like this genre of music and follow it regularly. I would have to say my favorite artist is Dillon Francis, straight up! I also find quality mixes from Steve Aoki, Diplo, Yellowclaw, and Caked Up.

First, I think their stories are pretty cool! Dillon Francis is my fave, so we’ll start there. I don’t know too much on his back story but I do know how he markets himself. Dillon Francis has an Instagram account and a Snapchat where his stories are public. Francis uses good PR skills to connect with his fans. His IG account includes funny videos making fun of “real facts” and are just totally random. This may not sound like a great marketing strategy but the target market is teens and young adults, so the nature of the videos match up. Totally random and smart-alecky. It’s so entertaining! Francis also posts pics from his concerts with oh so cool filters and captions. These are to promote his tour. His Snapchat story is quite the hoot as well. Snapchat(dillonfrancis)

Both Steve Aoki and Diplo are amazing artists as well.  Aoki has started his own record label called Dim Mak. It’s interesting because Dim Mak actually means “touch of death”. Cool or threatening? Either way, Aoki has become famous around the world for his music. This is quite the anomaly because music is generally regional within reason. Since most EDM music has no words or any significant language to it, its mostly beats, the music is transferable across languages and regions. Diplo has started a similar career. He too travels around the world for shows and has also created his own label, Mad Decent. With this he can promote his work and sell clothing and other products to label himself and his work.

Some people might think that these artists are just punks who make repetitive and annoying music, but obviously they’re doing something right! This music has rocketed in popularity. Many EDM type songs are seen in the top charts and many new pop songs coming out have electronic elements to them, incorporating the electronic sound into parts of the songs. Whether you like it or not, EDM is coming to the forefront of music. Its great music to gt you going, perfect for a workout session to get you pumped, or just good listening!

Week 4, Day 1

Monday was a crazy day. Not sure I got too much real communication in. Nothing of high quality which is too bad. I am excited that our entire apartment went to Family Home Evening! Our apartment and two others went sledding on a huge pile of snow in a field and it was so fun! I was the first girl to go down the really steep side because I’m cool like that. Afterward, we all went to a great hot chocolate place called Cocoa Lodge. They make the best frozen hot chocolate and if you get the opportunity, BUY SOME! It’s my absolute favorite and two of my other roommates succumbed to my persuasion. So i guess that is my communication for the day… I was a good persuader to try a new drink. Why wouldn’t they try it? It was the best decision of their life!
