My Social Media Manifesto

Social Media is undeniably a part of all our lives. There’s no getting around it. Even if you yourself do not have social media accounts, the people around you do. Your granddaughter is probably checking her Instagram right now. Your mom is posting about how proud she is of you on Facebook as we speak. Your friend just accepted a friend request from a mutual coworker. You are reading this on this type of social media right now.

So now I have some questions for you… Have you ever thought about how we all interact on social media? Did you ever think to have a plan for how you would act as you surfed the internet? I think if we all had structure to our interactions online, and really thought about how we would contribute, and what our beliefs are about social media and the internet, many things would change. We would see more personal updates from family, we would see more support from friends and family. We would connect more easily with those with whom we have not spoken to in a few years. Fewer hurtful words would be said. Going online would not be as much of a waste of time. You may not have concerns with some of these things, and that’s fine, but I have seen how I could improve my social media persona. I have also been asked to write about this subject for a class but I think it goes deeper than that.

Today, I want MY personal manifesto for social media to be known. It is rudimentary but I know it will help me think about how I interact with you and others online in public internet spaces. If you stop to take time and do something similar I believe you will definitely benefit for the better.

To start off…

My Beliefs:

On social media, I should…

  • Be real- I don’t want to portray something that I am not. I want to share my victories and some sorrows.
  • Positive- Even when I share content that is serious or negative, I want to point it to a higher ground, see the light in the darkness at some point.
  • Fun- I am a funny person! I love making people laugh!
  • Worry-Free- I promise not to over-advertise personal ventures or repost too often or spam out my feed. That’s a no-no
  • A Way To Reach Out- I want to use my accounts to reach out to old friends better, people  have not talked to in a few years.

My Goals:

I want to…

  • Post at least Bi-Monthly
  • Uplift others
  • Make my content/posts useful
  • Connect personally with friends and family better
  • Make it personal- I want to put my heart into whatever I put out for others to see and read.

Wisdom:

I have had a few years on social media. I know what I like to see and I know what I don’t. I don’t think my preferences are too different than others. Fewer ads, less reposted memes and gifs, more real updates from real people about real life, and good friends who are always still there for you. Be the kind of social media contributor that you like and see in others! Social media can have a huge impact especially since it is becoming ever more prevalent in our daily lives. Choose Wisely.

These are a few values I have thought about and believe will help guide my interactions and  hope it has given you something to think about as well. Thanks for the read and see you soon!

Week 9, Day 2

It was soo hard to get out of bed today! I don’t know what it is but I am conscious but not functioning and cannot wake up and roll out. That was my struggle today. It went a lot like yesterday. Got some homework done and folded my laundry. Had breakfast and took a shower then got ready for the day. It snowed about 3-4 inches last night unexpectedly so that really changed my outfit options. When I finally figured out my outfit, I made a sandwich and headed down for lunch with Mitch. We had lunch and goofed around, and then I went to Book of Mormon class. While listening absently to my weird teacher, I worked on my crochet project. I am making a circular rug. It goes black, pink, grey/white combo, green and later I’ll finish it with grey again. Working on the green right now. I mad progress in class but didn’t want the teacher to call on me while I was working on it. I put the crochet down for a little bit but then I started falling asleep so I picked it back up again. After class was devo with Mitch and half listened to Bro. Winkel. Worked on the crochet a little there too. I had another appointment at the Academic Discovery Center again today so I went to that after devo. This time I only needed to add a few electives and she approved it on the spot! Hallelujah! But I didn’t have my card to sign off for Comm 100 so I’ll do that tomorrow. I trekked on home and suddenly got caught up in a Mary Kay facial party with my roomies. The girl who came over for it was so cute and so sincere. She didn’t shove it down our throats too much and she was just nice and bubbly/ I may buy a few things form her but not this week… I made a little dinner snack thing for Mitchell, he stopped by for a quick food break before he had to go finish some other things. Didn’t see him for too long but that’s okay 🙂 I talked to my mom on the phone as I started my HTML activity for Visual Media. i thought I was done with coding but here I am learning yet another language of coding! It wasn’t too bad and went quick so that was good. Now here I am, sitting on my bed, listening to Classic Rock Love Songs on Pandora, blogging about my day for those who care to know! Anyway, I am blessed to have it easy this semester and I am blessed to have wonderful family, friends, and an awesome boyfriend 🙂

Week 8, Day 6

Slow Saturday today, but it was good. I finished up my Visual Media project and that went well. Dint have as many problems with slow saving or anything this time so that was good. After the project was posted and printed, I talked to my mom. We just talked about funny stuff I’ve been doing with my roommates and some other things. I like talking to my mom on the phone but sometimes I don’t totally know what to say, so I should work on that more..talking about her more. Because college kid life really isn’t too special! After that I went for a drive. I had been antsy toward the end of finishing my project and I wanted to explore and find a cool place nearby. I drove straight out of Rexburg past Sugar City, into Egin. I found a gravel road that goes for miles and is near the dunes. If only I had four wheel drive! I would mob out all the trails offshoots from the gravel road! It was tempting but my truck isn’t that meaty. I also had no service, no one knew where I was, and at the time I didn’t really even know where I was so that would have been a bad idea! Its amazing how dependant we are on our phones. I would have called someone to pick me up if I got stuck, I almost needed GPS to get out of there. Without service and communication, there was a possibility I would have been toast! I had to get back because it was date night with Mitchell and he already had tickets to McFarland. When we went and saw it, it was SO cute! I loved the movie. It was a great family movie and was just over all feel-good and nothing was inappropriate, which I really appreciate. It was a beautiful movie. We had snuck Taco Bell in also, so that was rebellious of us 🙂 Overall, had a nice relaxing slow Saturday and I enjoyed the evening with my cutie 🙂

EDM: New Music Releases and Other Noteworthy Artists

A new sub genre of music has recently risen in popularity in the last few years. Some know it as EDM (electronic dance music). Although EDM is a sub genre, there are many similar sub sub genres to it as well. These include trap, deep house, dubstep, and many other variations. I love all these! My personal Soundcloud account is full of all kinds of EDM music. This is funny because I am NOT  a rave kind of girl or a partier in any sense. I am pretty introverted and like my circle of close friends. There isn’t too much that appeals to me about going to music festivals for EDM that are riddled with drugs, weirdos, and close sweaty bodies. Aside from me being borderline antisocial, I like this genre of music and follow it regularly. I would have to say my favorite artist is Dillon Francis, straight up! I also find quality mixes from Steve Aoki, Diplo, Yellowclaw, and Caked Up.

First, I think their stories are pretty cool! Dillon Francis is my fave, so we’ll start there. I don’t know too much on his back story but I do know how he markets himself. Dillon Francis has an Instagram account and a Snapchat where his stories are public. Francis uses good PR skills to connect with his fans. His IG account includes funny videos making fun of “real facts” and are just totally random. This may not sound like a great marketing strategy but the target market is teens and young adults, so the nature of the videos match up. Totally random and smart-alecky. It’s so entertaining! Francis also posts pics from his concerts with oh so cool filters and captions. These are to promote his tour. His Snapchat story is quite the hoot as well. Snapchat(dillonfrancis)

Both Steve Aoki and Diplo are amazing artists as well.  Aoki has started his own record label called Dim Mak. It’s interesting because Dim Mak actually means “touch of death”. Cool or threatening? Either way, Aoki has become famous around the world for his music. This is quite the anomaly because music is generally regional within reason. Since most EDM music has no words or any significant language to it, its mostly beats, the music is transferable across languages and regions. Diplo has started a similar career. He too travels around the world for shows and has also created his own label, Mad Decent. With this he can promote his work and sell clothing and other products to label himself and his work.

Some people might think that these artists are just punks who make repetitive and annoying music, but obviously they’re doing something right! This music has rocketed in popularity. Many EDM type songs are seen in the top charts and many new pop songs coming out have electronic elements to them, incorporating the electronic sound into parts of the songs. Whether you like it or not, EDM is coming to the forefront of music. Its great music to gt you going, perfect for a workout session to get you pumped, or just good listening!

Week 8, Day 5

Yay Friday! Not really… Creating and saving my cover pages on Photoshop for Interpersonal was a NIGHTMARE! I had fun making the collages and arranging them etc. in PS, BUT my computer was super slow! Most of my time was wasted waiting for the stupid thing to save the files to a PDF so that I could take them to the print shop. I was afraid it wasn’t going to happen before class. While I was waiting for the files to save, I went and “got ready” for the day. I am sad to admit that I am kind of a mess today. No makeup, no shower, no fashion whatsoever. It really could be worse, but I aint feelin’ fly today. I came back to the computer to check on the saved files and it was just taking forever! Finally they saved, i put them on a flash drive and went to AlphaGraphics. I made the guy print them twice on accident. It didn’t take too long for the whole process but I was slightly annoyed that I had made the process go longer. I wanted the pages to be double sided, different sides. He printed four pages at first and then I was going to make him laminate them but the pages would have shifted in the process. So he printed again and the pages were a clean double side with no lamination issues. Except that there is a really thick hair and a black speck laminated into the pages :/ Next I trimmed them and left quickly. I drove home to pick up a few school things and ran out the door. I was only 10 minutes late and waked in on the prayer, but no biggie… Turns out the teacher didn’t even want the pages today. She said to keep them so she wouldn’t ruin them in transit for grading and such. She asked “Who brought theirs today?” and everyone raised their hand. Wow, I could have gotten away with half finishing them. I’m glad I got them done though. They are finished and have no problems and I am good! The rest of class was about listening styles and barriers. Still trying to work on being a better listener, even though I feel like I haven’t had too many opportunities. Now I have the rest of the weekend to do some more homework! It just never ends…

Finished Works:

These are in no way professional at all! Just what I was working on. They’re cute and funny but they’re just for me haha

Week 7, Day 7

What an average Sunday. I slept in so late! Like until 11:30. I haven’t done that in a long time! I got ready for church. I couldn’t find anything I wanted to wear even though I had just bought a new dress from this weeks sale. I went to church, it was Stake Conference. it was an alright session. i was really bored and feeling sick and antsy. I was sitting 5 people into a row and didn’t want to crawl past them to go take a break. I also had to pee so bad! As soon as the painful two hours was over, I was OUT of there! I literally got home within five minutes after the closing prayer. Immediately, I dressed down into my sweats and pink workout zip-up. I proceeded to take a 3 hour nap. i was awakened by my cousin Brooke calling me. She was calling to catch up and tell me all about her adventures in Hawaii at BYU-H. It was good to talk to her, I miss her and love her! After I was done chatting with her, Mitchell showed up after getting back from Utah! I was excited to see him and we went back to his apartment so he could unpack and start some homework. Overall, it was a chill day. I really didn’t get much done but I did have the opportunity to communicate with my cousin, whom I do not talk to often and wish I did!

Week 7, Day 2

Another great day! I made time for myself to go and workout and it went well. I went to devotional after my only class, Book of Mormon. Even though I didn’t get much out of it , I still felt uplifted and I had a feeling of spirituality. I  felt like I wanted to read my scriptures more and just try harder overall. After devo, I went home and took a  little break. I really wanted to avoid my homework and I didn’t really realize how much I actually had. While I was procrastinating, my roomies and I made our way over to this awesome Downeast Basics sale! We rummaged through the warehouse sale and I found a skirt, dress, and two shirts for only 17$. Score! After I had gone home from the warehouse sale madness, I got a call from my computer science tutor asking where I was for my appointment. I didn’t know I had an appointmnet! I rushed to get over to the Austin building with my computer and got there in a reasonable amount of time. I got a lot of stuff done in the appointment and another assignment for visual media after the appointment. It was 8:30 when I got home and I still had one more assignment to start. It was exhausting. Like I said before, I didn’t realize how much I had to do! I was glad that my tutor could contact me for my appointment. Technology is cool like that, it really helped me along. Communication is cool!
