Deconstruct an Advertisement

Lets talk about why Halo Top Creamery icecream has become so wildly popular, so quickly! I want to show this photo of an Instagram post by Halo Top. Its a bit older, but its a good one. Here are a few points I wanted to go over about this ad.

1. What is the main purpose of the ad?

The main purpose of this ad is to show off one of the many flavors from the company AND to show how few calories are in it. It shows a fun vibrant flavor…HOW COULD THERE POSSIBLY BE 240 CALORIES IN IT? Yes its that amazing. Thats the main point of this ad.

1. What are the ad’s strengths?

It is very bright and eye catching. Unicorns are also very trendy and popular at the moment, so that attracts likes and attention. It showcases the brands top feature- its Low Calorie feature, too.

1. What are the ad’s weaknesses?

It is not very informative. They only have text for one line of the post. Many people do not read long text posts on Instagram, but it still does not convey much information, just a clever little line about unicorns.

1. What is the ad trying to accomplish with its design?

It is trying to draw the eye to the calorie count. It is trying to show that you can have fun while eating ice cream and not counting calories. It is showing that Halo Top is a carefree treat.

1. What metrics (likes, shares, re-tweets, etc.) will be used to determine if the ad is successful?

This ad will be popular if it gets a lot of like. that is seen just under the photo with a count of how many people like it. It will also show if some of your friends or people you follow, like it too so it creates a community feel as well.

Halo Top is so great at advertising and I just wanted to highlight some of their tactics. They are a great brand to follow and observe.

Week 5 Class Notes

I was looking forward to this class all week! Visual Communication was our topic with Caryn Esplin. My emphasis is Visual Communication and I soaked this class up We learned about some basics in Visual media such as always adding a photo to blog posts, generating original work for portfolios, keeping a portfolio, and keeping track of your Klout score. I am happy to say that my Klout score is 52, I signed up as soon as I got back from class and integrated all my social media accounts. Sister Esplin also talked about some of the changing classes in the future and I am excited about them! I have made my grad plan already so I don’t think the new classes would show up but I hope I can catch the changes. I am interested in Vector Graphics and Social Media Design.

Visual skills are in high demand. Visuals go into everything we do in the business world. We need them to catch attention, to explain, to advertise, to inform, to be pretty, to represent…everything! Visual media is something I am interested in because it is creative, in demand, and it has elements of psychology to it, and I like to make things that are useful and beautiful. Hopefully I’ll be able to become my best with Visual media and do all I have hoped for. I am really glad we could learn a lot more about this emphasis, it gave me an extra kick to be better and keep learning.

Week 9, Day 2

It was soo hard to get out of bed today! I don’t know what it is but I am conscious but not functioning and cannot wake up and roll out. That was my struggle today. It went a lot like yesterday. Got some homework done and folded my laundry. Had breakfast and took a shower then got ready for the day. It snowed about 3-4 inches last night unexpectedly so that really changed my outfit options. When I finally figured out my outfit, I made a sandwich and headed down for lunch with Mitch. We had lunch and goofed around, and then I went to Book of Mormon class. While listening absently to my weird teacher, I worked on my crochet project. I am making a circular rug. It goes black, pink, grey/white combo, green and later I’ll finish it with grey again. Working on the green right now. I mad progress in class but didn’t want the teacher to call on me while I was working on it. I put the crochet down for a little bit but then I started falling asleep so I picked it back up again. After class was devo with Mitch and half listened to Bro. Winkel. Worked on the crochet a little there too. I had another appointment at the Academic Discovery Center again today so I went to that after devo. This time I only needed to add a few electives and she approved it on the spot! Hallelujah! But I didn’t have my card to sign off for Comm 100 so I’ll do that tomorrow. I trekked on home and suddenly got caught up in a Mary Kay facial party with my roomies. The girl who came over for it was so cute and so sincere. She didn’t shove it down our throats too much and she was just nice and bubbly/ I may buy a few things form her but not this week… I made a little dinner snack thing for Mitchell, he stopped by for a quick food break before he had to go finish some other things. Didn’t see him for too long but that’s okay 🙂 I talked to my mom on the phone as I started my HTML activity for Visual Media. i thought I was done with coding but here I am learning yet another language of coding! It wasn’t too bad and went quick so that was good. Now here I am, sitting on my bed, listening to Classic Rock Love Songs on Pandora, blogging about my day for those who care to know! Anyway, I am blessed to have it easy this semester and I am blessed to have wonderful family, friends, and an awesome boyfriend 🙂

Week 8, Day 4

Tired. That’s what I am today. I fell asleep in both of my classes today. I guess my body is trying to tell me that 1:30 bedtime is not good! I got 8 hours of sleep but it wasn’t the usual 8 hours, so I think that’s what got me. I will be honest, I had a lot of free time today and I totally squandered it. I don’t even know what I did with it either! I did clean up my room, that was much needed, but other than that I don’t know what I did while I did nothing productive. After I got home from class at 6, I got down to work. I made my rough draft for my Visual Media project. It didn’t look too bad for just one hour of work! I went and did the critique with a girl from my class. We met in the Spori and talked over the projects. It went well but I always feel like my work looks plain compared to hers. She always has cute spunky fun ideas for her projects and I am envious of her creativity. After the critiques, Mitchell and I worked on homework in the lounge at his complex. I got a few things done and started my cover pages collage thing for Interpersonal. They are the cover pages for the portfolio we will compile at the end of the semester. I went home at 12 and continued working on my pages. I stayed up until 2 working on one page! I’m hoping I will be able to finish them tomorrow morning so I can print and laminate them in time for class… Wish me luck!

Project 1 Flier

1. Description: This flier is for a college graduate leadership conference through Vouant Communications. I created this flier for my Visual Media class
2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): First, I made four sketches on printer paper. They were of four different ideas and this one won out. Next, I improved that sketched to what I wanted to do with InDesign. I created the project with Adobe InDesign as a rough draft. Then I had two people critique my design with good feedback to make changes. I changed the alignment and the position of the title and a few other minor things. Finally I printed it off and shared it here on my design blog!
3. Message: The message of this flier is that all graduating college seniors should attend this conference if they want a  advantage in the business world by gaining leadership skills required in the workforce.
4. Audience: Any graduating college seniors who are looking for a leg-up or want to jump start their professional career.
5. Top Thing Learned: How to align text so that it looks visually appealing. Also learned how to change to grayscale and high quality resolution.
